Business Model Canvas Template: Fillable Worksheet

Map how one business creates, delivers, and captures value with a fillable nine-block worksheet. Add concise notes, mark assumptions that need evidence, and download a printable PDF when you are ready.

What the Business Model Canvas helps you map

The Business Model Canvas puts customer segments, value propositions, channels, relationships, revenue, resources, activities, partnerships, and costs on one page. The blocks are connected: a change to the offer or customer group can affect delivery, partners, and the cost and revenue assumptions.

For an editable canvas with segment links, validation status, and live financial totals, open the interactive Business Model Canvas tool.

Use one canvas for one business model or a clearly defined offer. Completing it describes a model hypothesis. It does not prove customer demand, establish that the economics work, or replace customer research and financial planning.

Hypothetical example: a neighbourhood meal-kit offer

This fictional concept is for illustration only. A team might describe its customer segment as busy local households and its proposed value as pre-portioned ingredients with simple recipes. Possible channels could include an ordering site and local delivery, while the revenue hypothesis could be per-kit purchases or repeat orders.

The same idea raises questions for the other blocks: which kitchen capacity, menu planning, ingredient partners, packaging, and delivery work would be needed, and what would those activities cost? Each entry remains an assumption until checked with customers, suppliers, and realistic operating estimates.

Check the connections between blocks

  1. Start with the customer group and the value the offer is intended to provide.
  2. Trace how customers discover, buy, receive, and get support for that offer.
  3. List the people, work, assets, and partners needed to deliver it.
  4. Relate the main costs to those activities and resources, then state how revenue might be earned.
  5. Mark each uncertain entry and identify evidence that could change the model.

Business Model Canvas and Lean Canvas are different

The Business Model Canvas describes how a business creates, delivers, and captures value through nine connected blocks. Lean Canvas adapts the format for early-stage ideas, with a stronger focus on the customer problem, proposed solution, key metrics, and assumptions that need validation.

Choose the canvas that matches the question. Use this Business Model Canvas worksheet for a broader view of an operating or proposed business model. Use the Lean Canvas tool when you want to organize startup problem and solution hypotheses. Neither canvas validates demand by itself.

Questions about the Business Model Canvas template

What are the nine blocks in the Business Model Canvas?

Customer Segments, Value Propositions, Channels, Customer Relationships, Revenue Streams, Key Resources, Key Activities, Key Partnerships, and Cost Structure.

Can I download a blank worksheet?

Yes. Download the PDF before filling the fields to get a blank printable worksheet, or enter notes first to include them in the PDF.

Is the Business Model Canvas the same as Lean Canvas?

No. They share a one-page format but frame different questions. The Business Model Canvas maps a broader operating model, while Lean Canvas emphasizes startup problem, solution, and validation assumptions.

Does a completed canvas prove that a business will work?

No. It makes a business model and its assumptions visible. Validate customer, partner, operational, and financial assumptions with relevant evidence.
