Start with the Lean Canvas

Nine practical stages

A sequence for shaping and testing your plan

Start with the questions that matter now. You do not have to use every framework, and a result is only as useful as the evidence and assumptions behind it.

  1. Stage 1 of 9

Clarify the business model and problem

    Use the Lean Canvas framework.

    Question it helps answer
What problem are you addressing, for whom, and how might the business create and deliver value?
    What it does not answer
It helps organize a business-model hypothesis. It does not prove customer demand, validate your assumptions, or create a complete business plan.

  2. Stage 2 of 9

Understand customers and the value proposition

Use the Value Proposition Canvas framework.

    Question it helps answer
Which customer jobs, pains, and gains matter, and how does your offer relate to them?
    What it does not answer
It helps structure a customer-value hypothesis. It does not establish that customers will buy, or replace customer research.

  3. Stage 3 of 9

    Assess competition and alternatives

    Use the Competitive Analysis framework.

    Question it helps answer
Who or what are customers comparing you with, and where might your offer differ?
    What it does not answer
It organizes the competitors and comparison factors you enter. It does not discover every competitor, verify market data, or prove an advantage.

  4. Stage 4 of 9

Analyze the internal and external situation

    Use the SWOT Analysis framework.

    Question it helps answer
Which internal strengths and weaknesses, and external opportunities and threats, matter to this plan?
    What it does not answer
It helps classify relevant factors. It does not rank them, verify assumptions, or select a strategy for you.

  5. Stage 5 of 9

    Choose growth directions

    Use the Ansoff Matrix framework.

    Question it helps answer
Are you considering growth through existing or new products, and existing or new markets?
    What it does not answer
It classifies growth directions. It does not estimate market size, forecast results, or calculate the risk of an initiative.

  6. Stage 6 of 9

    Test uncertainty with scenarios

    Use the Scenario Planning framework.

    Question it helps answer
What plausible future conditions could change the plan, and how might you respond?
    What it does not answer
It helps explore possible futures. It does not predict which scenario will happen or assign reliable probabilities to it.

  7. Stage 7 of 9

    Assess risks

    Use the Risk Assessment framework.

    Question it helps answer
Which uncertain events could affect the plan, and which deserve attention or a response?
    What it does not answer
It helps record and prioritize risks using the information you provide. It does not eliminate risk or produce precise forecasts.

  8. Stage 8 of 9

    Make and compare key decisions

    Use the Decision Matrix framework.

    Question it helps answer
Which option best fits the criteria that matter to this decision?
    What it does not answer
It compares the scores and weights you enter. It does not make the decision objective or correct incomplete, biased, or uncertain inputs.

Focused guides for specific planning questions

The nine-stage sequence gives a broad planning path. Use these guides when you need to examine one decision in more detail.

Questions about using these tools

Will StrategyTools create a complete business plan for me?

No. The tools help you structure separate planning questions. They do not automatically write or assemble a complete business plan.

Do I need to use all nine frameworks in order?

No. Start with the question you need to resolve. Use another framework when it addresses a different gap, and revisit earlier assumptions when new evidence changes them.
