Lean Canvas

Validate your business idea with the entrepreneur-focused one-page business model

What is Lean Canvas?

Lean Canvas is a one-page model for making the riskiest assumptions behind a business idea visible. It connects a customer problem and segment to a proposed solution, value proposition, channels, revenue, costs, metrics, and possible advantage.

When to use it

Use it early to pressure-test a business idea and make its assumptions visible.

How the methodology works

Use the Lean Canvas to quickly validate business ideas by focusing on problems, solutions, key metrics, unfair advantages, and customer segments.

  1. Start with the customer segment, problem, and existing alternatives before describing the solution.
  2. Connect the proposed value proposition and solution to channels, revenue streams, and cost structure.
  3. Choose key metrics and state any claimed unfair advantage carefully. Mark uncertain assumptions for validation rather than treating the canvas as evidence.

Example: Testing a neighborhood laundry pickup idea

Illustrative situation: A hypothetical service is aimed at residents in apartment buildings who have limited time for laundry and currently use a mix of home machines and local laundromats.

How to apply it: The canvas can make the target segment, problem, pickup workflow, customer-acquisition channel, per-order costs, and repeat-use assumptions visible on one page.

Example limits: This scenario is illustrative, not evidence about a real business. Use evidence relevant to your decision for your own facts, ratings, probabilities, or financial estimates.

How to read the result

Start with the problem, customer segments, and unique value proposition. Then define the solution, channels, and revenue streams.

Questions about Lean Canvas

Is Lean Canvas the same as a complete business plan?

No. It is a compact model for testing a business idea's assumptions. It does not replace operating plans, financial forecasts, or customer research.

What should I write in unfair advantage?

Use a specific asset or capability that is difficult to copy and that you can support. If none is established yet, label it as an open question instead of inventing one.

Next step

Start with one customer segment and the problem it needs solved. Use the remaining sections to show how the offer could work and what needs validation.
