How to use the SWOT worksheet
- Write one decision, project, or business unit in the scope field.
- Use short, specific statements, and note where each statement came from.
- Classify factors by whether they are internal to the subject or outside it.
- Review the quadrants together and choose an action or a question to investigate.
SWOT is a way to organize factors, not a score or recommendation by itself. Do not put an internal weakness in the threat quadrant simply because it could cause harm. A threat is an external condition; a weakness is an internal limitation.

Example: a fictional bicycle repair shop
Hypothetical only: a two-mechanic repair shop is considering a small mobile-service pilot. A strength might be existing repair expertise; a weakness might be that the team has no mobile booking process. An opportunity might be an outside request for an on-site trial; a threat might be an external change that affects travel or supplier availability.
These entries are prompts, not facts about a real business. The shop should verify the request, capacity, costs, and operating constraints before deciding whether to test the service.
Move from four lists to a decision
Review combinations across the quadrants. Ask how a strength could help use an opportunity, how a weakness might make a threat harder to manage, and what evidence would change the assessment. Choose a specific next action, assign an owner, and revisit the worksheet when the context or evidence changes.
You can also open the interactive SWOT tool to organize factors and review strategic action combinations.
Questions about the SWOT template
What belongs in each SWOT quadrant?
Strengths and weaknesses are internal to the subject. Opportunities and threats are external conditions. Keep statements specific and explain their evidence or source.
Can I download a blank worksheet?
Yes. Use the PDF button with the fields empty for a blank, printable worksheet, or fill in the fields first to include your notes in the download.
Does completing a SWOT analysis decide what I should do?
No. It organizes relevant conditions. You still need to evaluate evidence, choose an action, and decide what to test or monitor.
