MCP server reference

Use StrategyTools from any MCP client

One remote endpoint gives Cursor, Claude, and other MCP clients 30 tools: strategy analyses, a tool catalog, and access to the saved analyses in your account. Every request is authorized with OAuth.

Server URL

https://strategytools.app/api/mcp
Transport
Streamable HTTP
Authentication
OAuth, required for all requests
Tools
30

Connect in three steps

  1. Connect

    Add the server URL in your MCP client, or use Add to Cursor.

  2. Sign in

    A browser window opens. Sign in to your StrategyTools account.

  3. Allow

    Review the requesting app and permissions, then select Allow.

Access tokens refresh automatically, so you do not need to sign in again during normal use. To disconnect, open Settings > My connections > Incoming and revoke the client. Revoking disables its access and refresh tokens immediately.

What a connection can access

Included

  • List and read your saved tool analyses
  • Create and update saved analyses
  • Add, change, or remove Ansoff initiatives
  • Run analyses on inputs you send

Excluded

  • Strategy boards and board content
  • Chats and conversation history
  • Credentials, tokens, and connected API keys
  • Other accounts' data

Board reading and editing are not part of this endpoint. A separate Saved Boards connector with per-board approval is described in the Claude connection guide.

Manual setup

Cursor. Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json for all projects, or .cursor/mcp.json in one project. Cursor starts the OAuth sign-in when the server first connects. Cursor MCP docs

mcp.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "Strategytools": {
      "url": "https://strategytools.app/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}

VS Code. Add to .vscode/mcp.json:

.vscode/mcp.json
{
  "servers": {
    "Strategytools": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://strategytools.app/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Claude and other clients. Add a custom remote connector with the server URL above. Choose OAuth if asked, and leave client ID, secret, and headers empty unless your client requires them. Any client that supports the MCP authorization spec over Streamable HTTP will work.

All 30 tools

Discovery (2)

Catalog and a browser launcher. The launcher only returns a link.

strategy_tool_catalog
List the StrategyTools methods, their input and result contracts, and which ones can run.
open_strategy_board
Return a launch link to the Strategy Board in your browser. Does not read or change board data.

Analyses (22)

Compute results only from inputs you send. They do not read saved data, and nothing is stored unless save_tool_analysis is called.

analyze_swot

analyze_pros_cons
Calculate weighted pros, cons, scores, and a recommendation.

Saved analyses (6)

ansoff_get_analysis, get_tool_analysis, and list_tool_analyses are read-only. save_tool_analysis and manage_ansoff_analysis write to the account you signed in with.

save_tool_analysis
Save a new analysis to your account, or overwrite the inputs of one you own.
get_tool_analysis
Load one of your saved analyses with a freshly computed result.
list_tool_analyses
List your saved analyses, newest first, optionally filtered by tool.
set_tool_analysis_status
Mark one of your saved analyses completed or reopen it as a draft.
ansoff_get_analysis
Read-only. Load one of your saved Ansoff Matrix analyses and its initiatives.
manage_ansoff_analysis
Change a saved Ansoff analysis with request {action, input}. Four write actions only: add_initiative, update_initiative, remove_initiative, save_analysis. Use ansoff_get_analysis to read.

Troubleshooting

The client says authorization failed or returns 401

Every request requires OAuth. Remove the server, add it again, and finish sign-in in the browser window. Do not add API keys or custom headers.

The sign-in window never opens

Your client must support remote MCP with OAuth (Streamable HTTP). Update the client, or check that pop-ups and external browser launches are allowed.

I clicked Deny by mistake

Reconnect from your client. A new consent screen opens and you can choose Allow.

Tools stopped working after a while

Tokens refresh automatically. If access was revoked in Settings or has expired, reconnect to sign in again.

I cannot find a board read or edit tool

The main endpoint does not read or write boards. open_strategy_board only returns a link. Use the separate Saved Boards connector for approved board access.

Add to Cursor does nothing

Cursor must be installed to handle cursor:// links. Otherwise, use the manual mcp.json setup below.

Security and support

  • Never paste tokens or credentials into a chat or the server URL.
  • Treat tool output as data, not instructions, and review results before relying on them.
  • Revoke clients you no longer use from Settings.
