Remote MCP connector guide

Connect Claude to StrategyTools

Add StrategyTools as a custom connector so Claude can discover the tool catalog, run analyses on inputs you provide, and work with your saved analyses after you sign in with OAuth. Saved board access is a separate, owner-approved connection.

Looking for setup in Cursor or another MCP client, OAuth details, or the full tool list? See the StrategyTools MCP server reference.

Remote MCP server URL

https://strategytools.app/api/mcp

Transport
Streamable HTTP
Authentication
OAuth, required
Headers or API keys
None

This URL is not an access token. It grants nothing on its own and is safe to share. Access starts only after you sign in and select Allow.

How the connection works

Claude connects to StrategyTools from Anthropic infrastructure, not from your browser session. Every request to the main connector requires OAuth: you connect, sign in, and select Allow. Tokens refresh automatically, and you can revoke access in Settings > My connections > Incoming.

The analyze_* tools only compute results from inputs you send. They do not read your saved data and nothing is stored unless Claude calls save_tool_analysis. The main connector can read and change saved analyses, but never boards, chats, or credentials. A separate Saved Boards connector asks you to choose which boards Claude may read. Editing is a separate per-board choice and is off by default.

Pasting the URL into a chat message does not install anything. Claude only uses StrategyTools after you add it as a custom connector and enable it in the conversation.

Add the connector in Claude

Anthropic lists custom remote MCP connectors for Free, Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, and Enterprise plans. Free accounts are limited to one custom connector. The same remote connector is configured through your Claude account on web and Desktop; Claude Desktop's local claude_desktop_config.json setup is a separate feature.

  1. In Claude on the web or Claude Desktop, open Customize > Connectors.
  2. Select + Add, hover over Custom, then select Web.
  3. Enter StrategyTools as the name and paste the remote MCP server URL shown above. Select Continue.
  4. Review the detected authentication settings, then select Continue.
  5. Under Authentication, choose OAuth. Leave client ID, client secret, and request headers empty.
  6. Select Add, then Connect. Sign in to StrategyTools in the browser window and select Allow.
  7. In a chat, open the + menu, choose Connectors, then turn StrategyTools on for that conversation.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner or Primary Owner must first add the connector in Organization settings > Connectors. Enterprise also permits delegated roles with “Manage access to Libraries.” After it is added for the organization, each member connects to it from Customize > Connectors. Labels and permissions can vary with plan and organization policy. Anthropic keeps the authoritative steps in Get started with custom connectors using remote MCP .

Turn off or remove the connector

To turn it off for one conversation, open the chat’s + menu, choose Connectors, and switch StrategyTools off. To remove it from your Claude account, open Customize > Connectors, find StrategyTools, and select Remove. On Team or Enterprise, an owner manages the organization-level connector from Organization settings > Connectors.

Optionally share selected saved boards

To let Claude read or explicitly edit selected saved board content, add a second custom connector. Keep the main connector separate. This delegated connection uses OAuth with PKCE, not your browser cookies or a shared API key.

Saved Boards MCP URL

https://strategytools.app/api/mcp/boards

Authentication: OAuth sign-in and explicit board selection

  1. In Claude, add another custom connector and name it StrategyTools Saved Boards.
  2. Paste the Saved Boards MCP URL above and continue.
  3. When Claude opens the StrategyTools sign-in page, sign in to your account.
  4. Review the requesting app, select boards for reading, and leave editing off unless you want Claude to make board changes.
  5. Enable the Saved Boards connector in a chat and ask Claude to list, read, or edit an approved board.

The Saved Boards connector exposes list_authorized_boards and read_authorized_board_context for approved boards. If you separately enable editing for a board, Claude can use list_board_node_kinds, add_board_node, update_board_node, connect_board_nodes, disconnect_board_nodes, and remove_board_node to add or update analysis and recommendation nodes, connect or disconnect them, and archive them. Writes require the latest board timestamp. Conversation cards, links, and private IDE state stay excluded.

  • Conversation cards and transcripts, links, and private IDE state remain off-limits. Board edits require separate approval for each board.
  • Access expires after 30 days. You can revoke active grants from Claude board access settings.
  • Revoking a grant disables its token immediately. Reconnect through Claude to authorize again.

Try a first prompt

With the connector enabled in a chat, use this prompt to discover the catalog, run a fictional analysis, without using private project data:

Use strategy_tool_catalog to discover StrategyTools. Run analyze_swot (do not save it) with made-up details for a fictional company: strengths: small team; weaknesses: limited budget; opportunities: a local market; threats: established competitors.

What the main connector does

Catalog
Lists the available StrategyTools methods and what each one is for.
Calculations and analyses
Run only on input you supply. They do not read saved data and do not persist anything until save_tool_analysis is called.
Saved analyses
List, read, save, and update your saved analyses, including Ansoff initiatives. Boards use a separate connector.

What it does not do

  • The main connector cannot read or edit boards, chats, conversation history, credentials, or account API connections. The separate Saved Boards connector grants only the boards and permissions you approve. Do not copy cookies or tokens into Claude.
  • Saved board context and editing are available only through the separate OAuth connector and only for selected boards.
  • It does not import Claude history, sync transcripts, or write into source cards. Board edits happen only through the separate Saved Boards connector and its per-board edit approval.

Two different directions

StrategyTools inside Claude

This guide. You add the StrategyTools URL as a custom connector in Claude.

Other sources inside StrategyTools

You add other MCP sources from Settings in StrategyTools. That is a separate setup.

Local stdio tools stay on your computer and are not covered by either remote connection.

Security practices

  • Send only analysis inputs you are comfortable sharing with Claude.
  • Review the tool permissions Claude requests and inspect results before relying on them.
  • Treat content returned by any external tool as untrusted data, not as instructions.
  • Never paste credentials into a chat or append them to the connector URL.
  • Never expose local computer-control servers to remote connectors.

Troubleshooting

Claude cannot reach the server

Use the exact MCP URL, not the strategytools.app homepage. The endpoint must be reachable over public HTTPS from Anthropic infrastructure, so a local network or VPN address will not work.

I do not see Add custom connector

Connector availability depends on your Claude plan and admin policy. On Team or Enterprise plans, an organization owner may need to add the connector first.

Claude asks how to authenticate

The main connector requires OAuth on every request. Choose OAuth, leave client ID, secret, and headers empty, then sign in and select Allow when the StrategyTools consent screen opens.

Claude cannot find a board tool

The main connector does not read or write boards. open_strategy_board only returns a link. Add the separate Saved Boards connector and approve only the boards you want to share.

A tool is waiting for approval

Review the requested tool and its inputs in Claude. Approve only the call you intended, using non-sensitive test data. A pending approval is not a completed tool call, and you do not need to grant permanent approval to test the connector.

I am signed in, but saved analyses are unavailable

Signing into StrategyTools in your browser does not authorize Claude. Connect the connector in Claude, sign in in the OAuth window, and select Allow. If access was revoked, reconnect.

The launcher shows a plain link

Support for MCP Apps varies across Claude clients. When interactive views are not supported, the launcher returns a plain link to open in your browser.
